When building your Learning Material on your Tovuti instance it is recommended to begin by creating categories. All of the other organizational levels will live within categories. Categories allow administrators to organize learning to a very high standard.
Think of Categories as neighborhoods.
A neighborhood is a collection of different homes. These homes can be unique and special in their own way, but they are all united by the context that a neighborhood, as a location, provides. For example, you may have three different onboarding courses that you require your learners to take. Organizing those courses into their own category will provide a clear designation of their purpose for your learners.
This article outlines the following concepts:
Create a Course Category
Go to Learning > Click Course Categories
A General Courses category appears in the Category list by default. To add a New Category, click on the New button.
In the Course Details, give the Category a name in the Title field. The Title Alias can be left blank as it is generated automatically.
Select if this Category is nested in a Parent Category, or leave the field blank if it is considered a “top-level” Category.
When configuring a Course, Admins may assign the course to one Primary Category and any number of Secondary Categories. Both types of categories are searchable and filterable by learners, while the primary category is the only one highlighted on the course card.
Select a Thumbnail Image (suggested image size: 1450x300 px) for the Category and provide a brief Description.
In the Permissions tab, set which Learners can view this category. Visibility Permission is set by Access Levels, User Groups, or Specific Users.
If applicable, limit the visibility by Brand.
Click Save.
From the Courses page, configured as a Leftside Menu Item, Learners may select a course category and click Search to only show courses in that category.
Manage Existing Categories
Admins can search existing categories by name and ID, and Quick Filter categories by Course, Creator, or Parent Category.
The list view grid includes the following information about existing categories:
- Parent category
- Permissions
- # of courses
- Created date
- Last modified date
Create a Category Navigation Menu Item
Course Categories can have their own page in the User Portal through Navigation Menus.
Go to Design > click Navigation Menus > click Dashboard Left Side Menu
Click New.
Give the Menu Item a Title.
In the Menu Item Type field, select Categories.
Select if Child categories are displayed as their own category cards in the Course Categories Page.
It is also important to check your ordering (where you want it to show up on the left side menu) and by Access Levels
Learner Experience
From the learner portal, the Course Categories page shows each of the Course Category Cards.
Each card contains Total Courses, Assigned Courses, and In Progress Courses. Parent Category cards include a dropdown to select child categories directly.
