Precise time tracking records when each learner enters and leaves a course and its lessons, so you can report on the time they actually spend.
What it does
When precise time tracking is on, the LMS records a time stamp for learner activity in courses and their lessons. Each period of activity is one tracked session, with a start time, an end time and a duration. You see the result in a new report called Time tracking.
Turn on recording
Go to Learning > Settings > Courses and switch on Enable precise time tracking. The setting is described on screen as recording time stamps for all activity in courses and their lessons, and it warns that reporting may be slower because of the volume of data. The setting is off until you switch it on.
Build the Time tracking report
- Go to Analytics > Report Builder and create a new report.
- Set Report type to Education, then choose Time tracking as the education report type.
- Under Data points, tick the columns you want. The choices are User ID, Display Name, User email, Username, Timestamp in, Timestamp out, Time spent, Course name, Course ID, Course complete, Total time in course, Lesson name, Lesson ID, Lesson complete and Total time in lesson.
- To look at only some courses, switch on Filter by courses and pick the courses. The report then includes only people who have progress in at least one of them.
- Save the report and open it.
If your site also has the Reporting workbench, it gains a Time Tracking dataset with one row per tracked session: course, lesson, session start, session end, session duration, whether the course or lesson was completed in that session, and running totals for the course and the lesson.
Why admins switch it on
- Show how long people really spend in a course or lesson, not just whether they finished.
- Support compliance or training-hour requirements that ask for time spent.
- See session by session when a learner started and stopped.
Before you switch it on
- Two things work together. The report option appears once this feature is available on your site. Time is only recorded while Enable precise time tracking is on, so turn the setting on as early as you can: time before that is not in the report.
- Learners are tracked in the background. Nothing changes on their screens.
- The extra data can make reports slower to open, as the setting itself warns.
- If the feature is switched off for your site later, the report returns nothing and the report option and the setting are hidden.
How to get this
This feature is included in your plan. Ask us to switch it on and we'll enable it for your site, usually within 1 business days. Tell us if you'd like it on a test site first.

- Reporting workbench — the newer way to build and export reports; it carries the Time Tracking dataset when both are on.
