A Question Bank is a reusable pool of quiz questions that can be shared across multiple quizzes. Rather than hardcoding a fixed set of questions into a single quiz, admins build a bank and configure each quiz to draw a random selection from it. This ensures that each learner sees a different set of questions per attempt, keeping assessments meaningful and reducing the ability to memorize answers over repeated sittings.
This article outlines the following concepts:
What Is a Question Bank?
Standard quizzes contain a fixed list of questions shown to every learner in the same order. Question Banks introduce a layer of randomization by allowing admins to:
- Build a larger pool of questions than any single quiz would present
- Configure a quiz to draw a set number of questions randomly from that pool
- Share a single bank across multiple quizzes or courses
For example, a Question Bank might contain 30 questions. A quiz linked to that bank could be configured to show each learner 10 randomly selected questions per attempt — meaning different learners see different questions, and the same learner sees a new set on each retake.
Note: Question Banks are separate from the standard quiz question list. Existing quizzes with manually entered questions are not affected unless you explicitly link a bank to them.
Create a Question Bank
Go to Content Creation > click Question Banks > click New
Give this Question Bank a Title and Description. If questions have already been created, upload them in a CSV.
Click Add Question to begin creating new questions.
Include an image, video, or audio if applicable. Type the Question Text. Select the Answer type.
Available Question Types
- Multiple Choice — one correct answer from several options
- Multi-Select — learners select all correct answers from a list
- True / False — binary correct/incorrect response
- Essay — open-ended free text response
Tip: Build your bank with more questions than any single quiz attempt will draw. The larger the pool relative to the draw count, the more variation learners experience across attempts.

Link a Question Bank to a Quiz
Any existing or new quiz can be linked to a Question Bank. Once linked, the quiz draws its questions from the bank rather than a manually entered list.
Within the Quiz editor, go to the Questions & answers tab.
Select Question bank and select the created Question Bank.
Note: A quiz linked to a Question Bank does not use the manually added questions in the Questions tab. The bank is the source of questions for the learner experience.
Configure Draw Settings
After linking a Question Bank, configure how many questions are drawn per quiz attempt.
Set if the order is randomized.
Draw Setting Considerations
- Variety — the larger the gap between bank size and draw count, the more unique each attempt feels
- Fairness — all questions in the bank should have roughly equal difficulty if pass scores are enforced
- Essay questions — if the bank contains essay questions, ensure draw settings are appropriate since essays require manual review for scoring
