If a course has no lessons in a learner's language, the learner sees the English lessons instead of an empty course.
What changes for learners
Normally a learner sees only the lessons in their selected language. With the fallback on, a course that has no enabled lessons in that language shows and tracks the English lessons instead. A course that has at least one lesson in the learner's language is unchanged, so a partly translated course does not mix languages.
Progress for the fallback lessons is saved under the English progress record.
Why admins switch it on
- Learners with a non-English language setting are not left with courses that look empty while you finish translating.
- You can publish translations course by course.
Before you switch it on
- English (en-GB) is the universal fallback. It overrides your site's Default Language setting.
- The rule is checked course by course: one translated lesson is enough to stop the fallback for that course.
- The setting applies to your whole site.
- The English lessons must exist and be enabled for the fallback to have anything to show.
How to get this
This feature is included in your plan. Ask us to switch it on and we'll enable it for your site, usually within 1 business days. Tell us if you'd like it on a test site first.
Then turn it on yourself: go to Learning > Settings, open the Courses tab and switch on Fall back to English lessons. It is off by default, and the switch only appears after we have enabled the feature for your site.
